ST THOMAS, THE APOSTLE - 3rd Jul

Thomas was a Jew and called to be one of the 12 Apostles. He was a dedicated but impetuous follower of Christ. When Jesus proposed to go to Bethany after Lazarus had died,

Thomas said to the other Apostles, “Let us also go to die with him” (John 11:16). He made one remark and has been branded as “Doubting Thomas” ever since. But if he doubted,

he also believed. He made what is certainly the most explicit statement of faith, “My Lord and My God!” (John 20:24-28) and, in so expressing his faith,

gave Christians a prayer that will be said till the end of time. He, who was the last to believe, was the first to make the full confession of the Divinity of the Risen Savior.

Some gratitude must always be credited to Thomas, who touched Christ as a man, but believed in him as God. Tradition says that at the dispersal of the Apostles after Pentecost

this saint was sent to evangelize to the Parthians, Medes, and Persians. He ultimately reached India, carrying the Faith to the Malabar coast,

which still boasts a large native population calling themselves "Christians of St. Thomas.
